To Seal or Not To Seal? Why you should seal interlocking pavers, natural stone and concrete

When anything is left outside exposed to elements it is usually a good idea to protect it as best as possible. How do you prevent sunburn? By protecting your skin with sunscreen. Sealing interlock and concrete surfaces is really not that much different.

The main reason you should seal your surface is to protect it from the following;

  • Discoloration from sunlight. This is important especially when you’re in love with the color of brand new interlock that was installed.
  • Weathering. This one is obvious. Weathering occurs on anything outside that is exposed to different weather elements. Surfaces in areas that experience harsh winters may experience more weathering than normal especially when salt is constantly applied to it for ice prevention.
  • Staining. Unfortunately permanent staining is prone to occur on surfaces that are raw and not protected by sealer.
  • Scratching. Interlock pavers, natural stone and concrete can scratch easily from certain things like moving furniture or when rocks get stuck in tires of vehicles that drive on the surface. Sealing helps to prevent surface scratching.

Another bonus when a surface is sealed: the surface’s natural colors are enhanced which helps maximize it’s best appearance.

Here at Northern Lawns & Landscapes we recommend resealing your interlock or concrete surfaces once every three to five years depending on the condition. You can consult with a landscape maintenance professional to determine when to re-seal your surface.
